Outfitter Tales: The Channel Changing How We See Deer Management

A Channel Worth Watching

Why Outfitter Tales Deserves a Spot in Every Stalker’s Playlist

If you already tuned in to my previous blog post on why deer management matters in the UK, then you’ll already know that Outfitter Tales were (and still are) a big part of my deer stalking journey.

After spending time at Outfitter Tales HQ with Chris and the team, seeing their approach first-hand, and completing my first-ever deer stalk, it only felt right to take a closer look at the channel itself.

So, whether you’re actively stalking or, like I was, simply keen to understand more about responsible deer management, this post is here to pin down who Outfitter Tales are, what makes their content worth watching, and explore what makes them such a valuable resource for the Serious Country Sports community (no gatekeeping the good stuff here!)

Who Are Outfitter Tales?

More Than Just a YouTube Channel

From my personal experience, good country sports content that’s honest, educational, and genuinely relatable can be surprisingly rare.

Outfitter Tales is a UK-based YouTube channel led by Chris Dalton and Rab Millar, followed by a growing audience of stalkers, shooters, and countryside enthusiasts nationwide. Chris is a highly respected stalker, recognised multiple times as Professional Stalker of the Year, with decades of experience managing deer in the UK, while Rab brings a practical, gear-focused eye to the field, with roots in South Ayrshire Stalking and in his work with Talon Gear.

Together, they’ve built a channel that goes beyond your typical shooting content. Outfitter Tales documents real-life deer stalking as a journey, from the early starts and long waits to the ever-indecisive British weather, along with the important decisions that matter long before and after the shot.

This isn’t a place you’ll find staged trophy shots or false narratives; instead, the focus is on genuine stalking, thoughtful cooking, and real conversations. I think this is exactly why Outfitter Tales has earned such a loyal following, and why it resonates so strongly with those who take deer management seriously (I know it was part of the reason for me).

Why Their Ethos Resonates with The Country Sports Community

Stewardship and Shared Values

One aspect of Outfitter Tales I think resonates particularly strongly with the country sports community is the way they value stewardship as well as sport. Their content consciously places ethical deer management at the centre, not to preach, but to show the respect, understanding, and genuine responsibility that comes with it.

Much like game shooting and even fishing, it shows an active awareness of the bigger picture surrounding country sports, with themes like sustainability, population control, and respect for the wider ecosystem woven naturally into their content, alongside practical field-to-fork cooking features that show how to make the most of the quarry.

I also think, as country sports enthusiasts, if we’re passionate about our sport, we want to learn about it. I like that Outfitter Tales emphasises understanding why decisions are made. From assessing deer numbers and protecting habitats to selecting the right animal and handling it correctly afterwards, the channel helps to build both knowledge and awareness, from technical and gear recommendations and tips to the deeper picture of conservation in action.

It’s a mindset that closely mirrors the values we hold here at Serious Country Sports, and an approach that feels genuine and refreshingly practical- one I think the country sports community instinctively understands.

What You’ll Learn (and Love) From Their Channel

Education Meets Entertainment

As I mentioned before, if we are passionate about something, we want to learn more about it- it’s human nature.

One of the reasons Outfitter Tales works so well is that it educates without ever feeling like a lecture. The content is varied and always grounded in real-world stalking and practical learning, so you never feel like you’re back in the classroom (phew).  Viewers are taken along on guided stalks across the UK, covering species such as muntjac, roe, red deer, and Chinese Water Deer, with each outing offering something different depending on ground, conditions, and season.

But that’s not all; conservation, fieldcraft, carcass handling, and countryside traditions are all central themes, along with the strong field-to-fork thread we mentioned running through the channel. From venison butchery and carcass processing to simple venison cooking and recipes, whether it’s a warming venison curry or a straightforward pan-fried dish, you’ll soon learn that stalking doesn’t have to end once you leave the field.

Of course, kit features regularly too- but always in context. Gear is put to the test in real conditions, whether that’s knives, rifles, thermals, or everyday stalking essentials, with practical “how-tos” covering skills like tracking, calling, gralloching, and setting yourself up properly.

On my own deer management journey, what I appreciated most wasn’t just the stalking, but the way Outfitter Tales helped me understand it. You come away not only entertained but better informed, with a clearer sense of why things are done a certain way, not just how.

Field-Tested Kit You’ll Spot in Action

Trust the Experts

If you spend enough time watching Outfitter Tales, you’ll quickly realise that they’re serious about their country sports kit- and it’s not just about the cameras. Again, it’s something that feeds naturally into the wider picture and story of deer stalking, and nothing feels staged, forced or overly rehearsed. It’s simply what’s being used, what works for them, and a real look at how it fares out in the field.

Across the channel, you’ll regularly spot well-known stalking and country sports brands such as Deerhunter, Härkila, and Brandecosse, alongside a range of optics, knives, and essential stalking kit. Again, what’s valuable isn’t just what they’re using, but how it’s used; layered up for long waits, tested through wet ground, wind, and the sort of conditions that quickly call out any weak points.

Of course, there’s real value in seeing the kit used this way and tested by experts as it is intended. It demonstrates how clothing moves, how pockets and features are actually used, and how honest reviews are formed after a long day out- and when Rab rates something, you can be fairly sure it’s had a proper soaking in Scottish weather first!

Much of the kit you’ll spot on the channel is also available at Serious Country Sports, so if you’re refining your own setup, it’s worth browsing our country sports collection, where you’ll find field-proven, expert-recommended essentials.

Learning to See It Differently

A Channel That Shares Experiences

Before spending time with Outfitter Tales, I’ll be honest, deer stalking wasn’t something I saw myself doing- I even felt a little bit cautious about the idea. It’s a topic that naturally stirs strong feelings, and it felt technical, serious, and honestly, a little removed from my own experience.

But seeing it through Chris and Rab’s lens changed that.

Fresh to the whole idea, what they did so well was slow things down to a pace I was comfortable with. I realised the importance of understanding the care and thought behind every decision, from reading the ground and assessing deer numbers to knowing when to take a shot and, just as critically, when not to.

For anyone on the fence about deer stalking, or unsure how it fits into conservation, their content doesn’t just explain it helps you see. It offers a way in for beginners and the curious alike, building understanding around ethical deer management, sustainable food, and a deeper awareness of the countryside we all value.
